When first setting up GD Products Center plugin, it can be useful to start with the set of data already prepared to help you understanding the way it all works. This tutorial contains demo data and instructions on how to install it. Make sure you follow instructions closely and follow up with other tutorials suggested.
First thing is to get the demo files: Click to Download Demo Files (v1). This is a ZIP archive containing 4 files.
Right now, plugin can’t export (and import) product prices, data for companies and product publish date. All this will be added soon, and this tutorial will be updated after that.
Step 1: Prepare your website.
It is best to start with blank GD Products Center plugin, with no product types present. In some cases, doing this while other product types are present can cause errors if using same names. To remove all plugin settings before the start, open plugins Tools panel, and on Maintenance tab find the last block called Plugin Reset.
It is highly recommended that you use latest plugin version. Right now, this tutorial needs plugin version 1.5.2 or newer.
Step 2: Unpack demo archive ZIP.
Create a folder on your local hard drive, and unzip the archive you downloaded there.
Step 3: Import plugin settings.
Now, open the plugins Tools panel, and on first tab for import/export of product types and settings, look at the Import section, like displayed on the image on the right.
Click on Browse button and from the ZIP archive folder, select file named: gdpc_settings.txt. This file holds basic plugin settings and definitions for product types and taxonomies used by the demo data. Set options on this page as indicated on the image.
Click on Execute to run import. After it finishes, open Product Types panel, and you will see 3 product types added: Phones, Tablets and Television.
Step 4: Create templates for product/company types.
This is required for any product type you have, and it needs to be done every time you switch to another theme. To do this, use these tutorials:
- Theme Templates Integration: Basics
- Theme Templates Integration: Content
- Theme Templates Integration: Example
Simplest way for this is to use some of WP default themes, and install templates for that theme.
Step 5: Clear rewrite rules (just in case).
Plugin usually handles rewrite rules updates, but you might wanna do this now, before proceeding with adding products. Open WordPress Settings -> Permalinks page. That’s it, rules are cleared. Or you can use plugin’s Maintenance tab where you have option to remove rewrite rules.
Step 6: Import demo data.
Now, we can import actual products data. Same Tools panel, this time go to Import/Export for products specifications tab, and the Import block as displayed on the image on the right. We have 3 product types, and we need to set import 3 data files from ZIP archive.
First, click Browse and select gdpc_specifications_phone.csv file. Set Product Type to Phones, and the rest as on the image. If you want to test import only, set Import Mode to Test. To import, switch Import Mode to Import. Click Execute, and file will be imported. This can take a minute or two, since plugin will also download images from the demo website we used.
Now, import Tables, click Browse button to select gdpc_specifications_tablet.csv file, switch Product Type to Tables, and click Execute. And finally, import Television, click Browse button to select gdpc_specifications_television.csv file, switch Product Type to Television, and click Execute.
You now have product types and products added.
Step 7: What else?
Now, you can setup Companies (Brands), since plugin added these two based on products imported. You can add logos for them for now. You can test product types settings, check out different templates provided for different product type pages and much more.
